Plenary speakers

Prof. Iva Tolić, Ph.D.

Professor of Biology and Head of the Laboratory of Cell Biophysics at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, Iva Tolić is a globally recognized biophysicist whose research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms of microtubule organization and mitotic spindle dynamics — structures essential for accurate cell division.

Her pioneering work has revealed novel aspects of microtubule behavior during mitosis, including the role of bridging fibers in maintaining tension between chromosomes and previously unrecognized functional elements of the spindle apparatus. Prof. Tolić’s interdisciplinary approach combines advanced microscopy, quantitative analysis, and theoretical modeling to deepen our understanding of cellular architecture.

Prof. Tolić’s scientific excellence has been acknowledged through numerous international honors, including the prestigious Lieben Prize, membership in EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) and Academia Europaea, and competitive funding from the European Research Council (ERC).

Prof. Sandra Bischof, Ph.D.

Head of the Textile Science Research Center (TSRC) at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Textile Technology

Prof. Sandra Bischof is an expert in textile science and material characterization, with a focus on advanced microscopy techniques for the analysis of natural and synthetic fibers and composites. Her research bridges fundamental material science and practical applications, employing cutting-edge imaging methods to investigate fiber structure, surface properties, and nano structural features that influence textile performance.

Prof. Bischof’s interdisciplinary approach combines microscopy, materials characterization, and applied research to advance the understanding and development of advanced textile materials. She is an active contributor to the international textile and microscopy community, with numerous publications and collaborative projects in textile science and advanced imaging techniques.

RNDr. Marie Vancová, Ph.D.

Dr. Marie Vancová leads the Electron Microscopy Laboratory at the Institute of Parasitology, Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and works as a researcher at the University of South Bohemia.

She specializes in electron microscopy, with a focus on biological sample preparation, ultrastructural analysis, and immunoelectron microscopy. Her research applies advanced imaging approaches, including volume electron microscopy, to study host–pathogen interactions and other biological systems, providing insight into complex cellular organization.

As an active researcher and laboratory head, Dr. Vancová continuously contributes to the development of innovative methods in electron microscopy and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the biological sciences.

Prof. Sašo Šturm, Ph.D.

Prof. Sašo Šturm is Head of the Department for Nanostructured Materials and Scientific Advisor at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana. He also leads the National Research Programme “Nanostructured Materials” and serves as Co-Director of the International Associated Laboratory CNRS-JSI.

His research focuses on nanoscience and advanced materials characterisation, particularly the development and application of advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques for materials research, including in situ TEM in liquid environments. His work addresses nanomaterials and interfaces at the atomic scale, with additional focus on magnetic materials and complex metallic alloys.

Prof. Šturm is also a full professor at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School and an associate professor at the University of Ljubljana. He has held research and visiting positions at several international institutions, including the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Graz Centre for Electron Microscopy, Toyama University, Tokyo University of Science, Hokkaido University and Sabancı University. He is a former president of the Slovene Microscopy Society and currently serves as a member of the Executive Board of the European Microscopy Society. His scientific impact is reflected in more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, a book chapter, 2 European patents, and over 3,300 citations (Google Scholar).
